Varsity Head Coach
Coach Bill Schreier enters his twenty-eighth year as a teacher at Wheaton Warrenville South High School, where he works in the Social Studies department teaching AP Economics and Economics. He is the head coach of both the girls and boys varsity volleyball programs for the last 22 and 25 years respectively. In his twenty-two years as the girls head coach, Schreier has compiled a record of 513-320, including a 4th place finish in state during the 2002 season and a State Runner-up in 2019. On the boys’ side is where he has made his impact felt the most as he has the highest all time winning percentage ever in IHSA volleyball history with a record of 718-226. This makes him the all time winningest coach in IHSA history.
Through the twenty-seven years that Schreier has been at the helm of the boys program it has gone to meteoric heights and had success that has been unparalleled in Illinois sports history. They have made ten trips to the Elite 8 since 2001, having gone 8 consecutive years and have won 7 state championships including a three-peat in 2007, 2008 and 2009. They finished 2nd in 2010. They have also gone back to back in 2004 and 2005. Three times the Tigers have won state with an undefeated season, 2001 led by 2008 Olympic Gold medalist Sean Rooney to a 38-0 record, 2004 with a 41-0 record and then again in 2012 with a 42-0 record led by 2016 Olympic Bronze Medalist Thomas Jaeschke, culminating with the first ESPN National Championship for a team from Illinois. He has also obliterated state records for wins, appearances and state championships during the State Final tourney.
Schreier has been recognized for this exemplary record by being named Illinois Coach of the Year five times in addition to being named Mizuno National Coach of the Year in 2007, 2012 and a finalist for the Gatorade National Coach of the Year Award in 2009 and 2025. He has also been inducted into the IHSVCA Hall of Fame as a member of the Class of 2020 in addition to being inducted into the IVCA Hall of Fame as a member of the Class of 2022.
Though the on the court success is good, every Tiger team that he has coached excels just as well in the classroom, having been named IHSA Team Academic after every season. The last twenty-four years they have also been recognized nationally for this classroom success by being named Tachikara National Team Academic Award winners on both the girls and boys sides. WWS is one of nine high schools in the nation to be named for this prestigious award in both sports.
Schreier has also done a great job of building a tradition of excellence as it says on the backs of the team’s program shirts. Over the last twenty-four years seventy-eight of his players have gone on to play Division 1 volleyball and twenty-three have entered the coaching ranks themselves. He says, “The discipline, work ethic and passion it takes to become a Division I athlete carries over into all aspects of life, and I truly believe all our athletes will be well-prepared for anything they will face in the future. We due pride ourselves on teaching life lessons here.”
Schreier came to Wheaton Warrenville South with a veritable background of volleyball coaching experience, having coached at the club, high school and collegiate levels. Prior to joining the Tigers, Schreier was the assistant coach for the Naperville North High School boys’ volleyball team here in Chicago. Schreier spent almost four years with Sports Performance volleyball club in Aurora, Ill. and coached at various age levels, ranging from youth to elite high school teams. Three of his teams reached the USAV Junior Olympic Nationals.
A native of Downers Grove, Ill., Schreier attended Northern Illinois University and graduated in 1991 with a degree in Criminal Justice. He has since earned his master’s in Educational Leadership from Aurora University in 2001. He was also named a Fulbright Scholar in 1998 and was rewarded along with two hundred other U.S. teachers with a trip to Japan. He is most proud of his wife, Jennifer and children Caitlyn (26), Ethan (24) and Conner (21), they reside in Naperville.
